Monfragüe's Blog

The last weekend, the ADE-TUR students group hiked to the Monfragües Natural Park. It´s a natural reserve rely on a great fauna and flora diversity and it finds in Extremadura’s region, in the west of Spain. There are many places of a great beauty but we can stand out the most famous, like La Garganta de los Infiernos, El Castillo de Monfragüe, y El Salto del Gitano.

Finally, we could visit El Salto del Gitano that is a paradise for birdwatchers, due to his greatness ornithology. Now, we go to speak of the most important birds.

(Juan Carlos Sánchez Sánchez)

The first stop that we did in our excursion was in ‘El salto del Gitano’. There we could see many kind of birds, so we can say that Monfragüe is probably the best place to see birds in Europe. We emphasize as more characteristic species the black vulture that counts on near 400 couples, that can be observed since the viewpoint of the park.

Also they are characteristics and of great importance: the imperial eagle that alone inhabits in this nature reserve, the egyptian vulture that counts on near 30 couples, the griffon vulture (The species more visible of the park with near 800 couples), the imperial eagle and bonelli`s eagle are more scarce (6-7 couples of each species) and the wandering hawk.

Other birds of interest that include about ten couples are the real owl, red kite, booted eagle and short-toed eagle. The goshawk, the sparrowhawk are scarcer and difficult to see. We have to indicate also the birds of other habits, as the solitary rocker. The forest birds are less singular, therefore the majority they are habitual to a large extent of Extremadura.

Along our tour, we cross one of the most important river in Spain; the Tajus river. The Tajus river configures themselves as the authentic thorn number of this natural space and next to the Tietar river and other smaller river bed constitute an extensive hydrographic network inserted most of the times among large high rocks of quartzite that have alert as the most adequate enclaves to receive the cave paintings.

In their slopes, valleys, edges and summits extends an impressive green cloak that has to the oak, the rockrose and the idiot to their authentic protagonists; but where do not lack neither forests of tassels, ashes, and a big variety floral wealth that serves of refuge and food to the multiple herbivorous of the Park.

In the middle of our guide visit, we did a stop in the Tajadilla’s Viewpoint. There we could see various cormorants in the bank of the Tietar river, as well as the dam of this river too.

In this stop we take advantage to eat, while Jaime (our tourist guide) explained us more about the cormorants and we watched them trough the binoculars. In this instant we had the luck to see a red deer for a little time.

Later we decide to take our backpacks, get on bus and go to other viewpoint, to try we the imperial eagle. But this event didn’t happen.

In Villareal de San Carlos there was an international fair, the FIO. Every year, in this event you can find some stands of different territories of Spain that show us his wildlife, all in relation to the birds. Besides, in these stands we can take pamphlets and buy typical products.

There, we could see some partners that were representing our business and tourism faculty, but on Saturday, our partners couldn’t work well because a brutal wind pulled out various fair’s stands.

Finally, we can say that Monfragüe since a professional point of view, economic or even cultural has become a time record in one of the largest European events of the ornithological sector. This objective of the faire is value and to enlarge the respectful and sustainable tourism with the environment.

This fair shelter visitors and exhibitors originating in countries as Portugal and Argentina, and of different autonomous regions.

The objective was to bring to light the singular ornithological values of the park and to become a resource more to continue growing tourist.

Since the point of view economic the little one business of the place can be considered a point to improve since the few establish some high prices being taking advantage of the occasion.
